The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam is administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). It consists of 175 multiple-choice questions (150 scored and 25 unscored pretest items) with a 4-hour time limit.
The exam covers three content areas: Perioperative Patient Care (Preoperative Preparation, Intraoperative Procedures, and Postoperative Procedures), Ancillary Duties (Administrative and Personnel, Equipment Sterilization and Maintenance), and Basic Sciences (Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Surgical Pharmacology). Intraoperative Procedures carries the highest weight at 45.3% of the scored questions.
